Latinos point to issues that could tip election to Trump over Biden

Support for a wall at the southern border and deporting all undocumented immigrants has jumped by at least 10 points since 2021, according to a new poll from Axios released Thursday.

Polling has shown immigration and the border are key issues in the 2024 rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Polling has also shown voters favor Trump when it comes to those issues.

From Axios: “The findings suggest former President Trump’s calls for more border security — and perhaps his anti-immigrant rhetoric — are registering even among people who may have ties to immigration.”

According to the report, “42% of Latino adults surveyed said they support building a wall or fence along the entire U.S.–Mexico border. That’s a 12-point jump from December 2021, and 38% support sending all undocumented immigrants in the U.S. back to their country of origin — up from 28% in 2021.”

This comes as Latinos in the U.S. are increasingly turning their backs on Biden and view Trump more favorably at a consistent rate, per an earlier poll from Axios.

Biden’s “advantage over Trump among all Latinos has fallen from 29 points after Biden’s first year in office (53-24) to just 9 points (41-32), amid frustrations over inflation and crime,” according to Axios, which conducted the Axios-Ipsos Latino Poll in partnership with Noticias Telemundo.

Last month, Biden personally appealed to Latino voters, saying at an event in Phoenix they’re the reason he defeated Trump in 2020 and urging them to help him do it again in November.

“I need you back,” he told several dozen supporters packed into a local Mexican restaurant.
