Orenthal James Simpson, known as O.J., died on Wednesday, his family said in a statement on X.

"On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer," the post said. "He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."

Simpson played in the NFL for 11 seasons but, despite the long career, became most known for his acquittal of the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and friend Ron Goldman. While he was able to walk away from a criminal prosecution, a civil trial forced him to pay $33.5 million in damages to the families.

In the years that followed, he was engaged in a criminal scheme, he said, to recover some of his memorabilia. He was ultimately found guilty of armed robbery and kidnapping on Oct. 3, 2008, and sentenced to a minimum of nine years and a maximum of 33 years. He was granted parole in 2017, his biography outlines.

Recent photos of Simpson showed him walking in Las Vegas looking "frail" and "limping," the Daily Mail said.

The photos of the "frail" Simpson were taken in Nov. 2023, but the report never included information that he was suffering from prostate cancer. That information wasn't released until Feb. 2024, when he posted a video on X, dispelling the myth he was in hospice care and was planning to host a Super Bowl party.
