'Won't impact his performance': Nuno backs £15m Nottingham Forest star to prove Gary Lineker wrong

Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has backed one of his senior players to prove Gary Lineker wrong.

The Reds lost 3-1 to Tottenham last weekend and now face Wolves at the City Ground and Everton in quick succession in desperate need of more points.

With Luton winning for the first time in 10 games against Bournemouth, Forest are now only out of the drop zone on goal difference.

The game against Wolves sees Espirito Santo return to his old club and the Forest head coach is in serious need of a morale-boosting win.

After losing at Tottenham,Lineker made a claim about Chris Wood – but Espirito Santo is backing the Forest striker to prove him wrong.

What Nuno Espirito Santo has said about Chris Wood

Well, it was a bittersweet afternoon for Wood at Tottenham as Forest suffered a defeat. The 32-year-old was on the scoresheet but he also missed a sitter shortly after.

Now, after Lineker’s comments, Espirito Santo has been quizzed on whether he thinks that miss will impact his performance going forward – and he’s defended his talisman.

Forest head coach Espirito Santo said in his press conference: “I don’t think he has an issue on that, he has the experience of doing this before and that missed chance won’t impact his performance this weekend.”

Wood has been brilliant this season. He has stepped in for the injured Taiwo Awoniyi and scored 13 goals in all competitions during the campaign.

Forest need Wood to stay fit

It’s been claimed today that Forest striker Awoniyi is on the mend – but right now, the £15 million signing from Newcastle is the most important of the two forwards.

Wood has scored all different types of goals and hopefully, he can continue to fire and keep Forest in the Premier League this season.

Ultimately, Espirito Santo needs all of his players fit and ready to make an impact. Wood, however, is important based on the sheer volume of goals he’s been scoring.

Wood doesn’t have an amazing injury record. As a result, if the Reds did lose him at this stage of the season, it could prove seriously detrimental to Forest and their Premier League status.
