Ryan Yates shares what he tried to do to James Maddison during Nottingham Forest defeat to Tottenham

Nottingham Forest lost 3-1 to Tottenham in the Premier League yesterday and an intriguing battle between Ryan Yates and James Maddison took place.

The Reds fell behind when Murillo put through his own goal inside the opening 15 minutes of the contest.

Forest were level, however, when Chris Wood scored his 12th Premier League goal of the campaign on 27 minutes.

Wood then missed a sitter, leading to some critique from Gary Lineker and Forest succumbed in the second half.

Super goals from Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro ensured a pretty comfortable second half for Tottenham and Forest remain in trouble.

Yates was once again tossed the captain’s armband for this game and it’s a role that he’s fulfilled since Joe Worrall left for Besiktas.

The 26-year-old enjoyed an intriguing battle with Maddison who lined up in the Tottenham team looking to get back to his best form.

Yates was cautioned after making four fouls in just 13 minutes but there was a flash point to come involving the two players later in the half.

What Ryan Yates said about Tottenham star James Maddison

Well, this was an intriguing battle and it ended up in a situation where Maddison was extremely lucky not to be given his marching orders.

Yates appeared to be punched by Maddison as play waited to resume but Michael Salisbury on VAR deemed it unworthy of a review to referee Simon Hooper.

After the game, Yates was quizzed on the incident with the Tottenham star and he hinted that Forest were unlucky once again.

He told BBC Sport: “James Maddison is a good player. I know he makes them tick. It is my job to disrupt the momentum. A few decisions probably didn’t go our way, but we’ve seen the inconsistency in the Premier League this season.”

Yates now in serious danger of losing his Forest place

This was nothing short of a poor display from Yates and he must now be wondering whether or not he’s done enough to keep his place next week.

Forest face Wolves at the City Ground in a game that must be won from a Forest perspective as they bid to pull clear of the relegation zone.

Yates made four fouls in 13 minutes, was cautioned and produced a pretty abject display by his standards – making just one tackle, according to Who Scored.

Despite his poor display, Yates had a point over this incident. The fact it wasn’t even reviewed by the on-field referee is frankly ridiculous.

Still, from a Forest perspective, nothing surprises us anymore with match officials and things could have been so different had Maddison seen red with over half of the game left.
