'Showing his class': Paul Merson says Tottenham have a truly 'eye-catching' 22-year-old in their ranks

Tottenham Hotspur are enjoying quite a fruitful season, certainly in comparison with last term.

Spurs were early pace-setters in the Premier League and remain in pursuit of the top four after Ange Postecoglou took the reins in the summer.

A combination of great tactics, solid man-management and some shrewd acquisitions in the transfer windows have helped turned Tottenham’s fortunes round.

Admittedly, Spurs made some great signings even before Postecoglou’s arrival, with the likes of Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr going on to become top players.

However, the Australian has a great track record in the transfer market and he certainly worked his magic over the past two windows.

For instance, signing Netherlands international defender Micky van de Ven proved a real masterstroke, and he was a bargain for Spurs too.

The 22-year-old arrived from Wolfsburg for an initial £34million fee, and he has become a key player for Tottenham over the course of the season.

Van de Ven’s efforts have helped transform a previously rickety Spurs defence into a more solid unit.

Paul Merson, writing on Sportskeeda ahead of Tottenham’s weekend trip to Newcastle United, sung the centre-back’s praises.

What has Paul Merson said about Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven?

Merson wrote: “Newcastle United got a great result against Fulham but I can’t recall them playing particularly well,” wrote Merson.

“Tottenham, on the other hand, were outstanding against Nottingham Forest, with Micky van de Ven showing his class at the back with another eye-catching display.”

Van de Ven scored an outstanding goal to put Spurs back in front after Chris Wood had equalised for the Reds at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As per Sofascore, the Dutchman also won five ground duels and three aerial duels, and registered five tackles, two clearances and one interception.

All in all, Van de Ven has been a revelation for Spurs and, at just 22 years of age, he’s still nowhere near his prime. He’s set to become better and better.
