'I am expecting': Chris Sutton predicts what the score will be between Newcastle and Tottenham tomorrow

Chris Sutton is predicting another goal-fest at St James’ Park when Newcastle United take on Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

There have been plenty of thrillers at St James’ Park this season, with Newcastle United’s most recent home game being the 4-3 comeback against West Ham United. That was a stunning game of football, and one that could be season-defining for Eddie Howe‘s side.

Those three points dragged Newcastle back into European contention, and they have since put four more points on the board. As it stands, the Magpies are eighth in the Premier League and could briefly go sixth with a win against Spurs in Saturday’s early kick off.

But this will be an extremely challenging game, against a Tottenham side that beat us 4-1 earlier in the season. Ange Postecoglou’s side are currently fourth, and are on course to qualify for the Champions League.

It should be an excellent fixture for the neutrals, and that is exactly what Chris Sutton is expecting.

Chris Sutton predicts the score of Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

The former Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers striker has predicted every Premier League game this weekend for BBC Sport.

He expects Newcastle to lose at home, backing Spurs to pick up three points on their travels and win 3-2.

“What a game this will be,” he wrote.

“I was at Newcastle’s 4-3 win over West Ham at the end of March and I am expecting a few goals this time too.

“I didn’t see Newcastle’s win at Fulham last week coming, but it was a great result and it means they are looking up the table now, with their sights set on sixth place.

“Tottenham’s target is to finish fourth and they won’t settle for a point here. It is going to be very close but I have got a feeling they will edge it.”

Paul Merson has a very different prediction

Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has also predicted this weekend’s Premier League fixtures for Sportskeeda, and he disagrees with Sutton.

Merson does not think there will be as many goals, while he believes it will be the Magpies who come out on top. He has backed Newcastle to win 2-1.

“Newcastle got a great result against Fulham but I can’t recall them playing particularly well,” he wrote.

“Tottenham, on the other hand, were outstanding against Nottingham Forest, with Micky van de Ven showing his class at the back with another eye-catching display.

“At St James’ Park, I fancy Newcastle, so I’m going for a 2-1 home win.”

A similar result to last season would be amazing for Newcastle

Newcastle and Tottenham clashed at a similar stage last season, but the stakes were very different. At the time, they were both pushing for the top four as they aimed to qualify for the Champions League.

It proved to be a defining meeting at St James’ Park, as Newcastle completely blew Spurs away. Howe’s side scored five goals in the first 21 minutes, going on to win 6-1.

It was an incredible game, and one that Toon fans will reminisce about for a very long time.

That win played a key role in Newcastle qualifying for the Champions League, and a similar result this year could guide the Magpies into the Europa League. It is not quite as glamorous, but qualifying would be a major achievement given the season we have had.
