'Big shoes to fill': Journalist suggests 'fantastic' Sheffield Wednesday man could be irreplaceable

Sheffield Wednesday will have to replace one ‘fantastic’ man at Hillsborough this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are set for huge overhaul this summer as they see over ten first team players come to the end of their contract.

The likes of Di’Shon Bernard, Barry Bannan and Josh Windass could all leave Hillsborough on free transfers at the end of the season, with the club yet to discuss new deals as they look to first focus on staying in the Championship.

The Owls will likely have to bring in a long list of new players no matter what league they end up in, though they will hope that they will be boosted by Danny Rohl‘s presence in their transfer hunt.

If the German does stay in Yorkshire this summer then they could have access to his long list of contacts as they look to rebuild, though they will no doubt be eager to keep hold of some of their current stars too.

While their main focus over the summer will be giving their squad a makeover, Sheffield Wednesday will also have to bring in someone to replace Nicky Weaver.

The club confirmed yesterday that their Head of Academy Goalkeeping will be stepping down at the end of the season, having spent 29 years with Wednesday as both a player and a coach.

Sheffield Wednesday now have ‘big shoes to fill’

In theclub’s statement, Weaver said: “I’d like to thank all the managers I’ve worked for, and Dean Ramsdale for giving me the opportunity as a coach with the academy. I’ve loved working with Steve Haslam, who does a great job leading the academy.

“I won’t be a stranger though. My kids are Wednesday fans, my son is actually in the academy right now so I’ll still be knocking around the place!

“It’s been a fantastic journey for me with Wednesday. I’ve stepped up to the first team for spells as well as coaching the academy keepers, under Jos Luhukay, Steve Bruce, Neil Thompson and Lee Bullen as interim managers, Darren Moore and more recently Danny Röhl. I want to thank everyone I’ve worked with and wish everyone at Wednesday all the best for the future.”

Supporters were left disappointed that Weaver would be leaving Middlewood Road, while journalist Dom Howson has put pressure on his replacement.

He wrote on X: “Fantastic coach and person. Whoever replaces Weaver has got big shoes to fill.”

Does Danny Rohl want his own Nicky Weaver?

Many fans have reacted to the statement with questions over Danny Rohl’s future, wondering whether this means he is eager to bring in more of his own coaching staff.

With Nicky Weaver citing various personal reasons as to why he has chosen to leave the club, it seems unlikely that he has been urged out of the door due to Rohl’s plans.

It also seems unlikely that the German would have made such plans at this stage of the campaign. He has already refused to discuss players’ contracts, so to consider replacing Weaver when he may not even be at Wednesday seems highly unlikely.

However, if the summer arrives and he is staying, he will have an opportunity to pick and choose who he wants in that department.
