4th man charged in shooting near Rutgers where woman was hit by stray bullet

A fourth person was arrested this week in connection with a shooting near Rutgers that wounded two people affiliated with the university, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office announced Friday.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on April 5 near a home on Easton Avenue, just three blocks from the university’s New Brunswick campus, the office said.

The alleged shooter, Christian Farmer, 22, of New Brunswick, fired from a car and struck a man, and a woman who was inside her home and wounded by a stray bullet, investigators said.

The next day, detectives arrested Farmer, Ryan Nasi, 22, of Hillsborough, and Walter Rodriguez-Cardenas, 20, of Plainfield, authorities said. Farmer was charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons offenses while Rodriguez-Cardenas and Nasi were both charged with armed riot.

Rodriguez-Cardenas was additionally charged with hindering apprehension for allegedly driving the getaway car, prosecutors said.

On Sunday, the office said detectives were working to identify a fourth suspect and on Wednesday, Sayyid Acosta, 21, of Plainfield, turned himself into the New Brunswick Police Department. Acosta was charged with third-degree armed riot.

His alleged role in the shooting has not been revealed by investigators.

The man shot on April 5 has since been released from the hospital. The woman hit by the stray bullet is still being treated for her injuries, the office said Friday.

The prosecutor’s office has not identified the victims by age but has said they are affiliated with the university.

Anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area is asked to call New Brunswick Police Detective Freeman at 732-745-5200.
