Report: Spurs now want £34m table-topper who's 'one of the most promising defenders in football'

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to be busy in the summer transfer window as Ange Postecoglou’s rebuilding job continues to take shape.

Spurs have enjoyed a decent season so far (for the most part), hitting the ground running to the point they were considered dark horses for the title at one point.

And while it proved too big a challenge for Tottenham at this point, they’re still in the hunt for a spot in the Champions League, just about.

Spurs were one of the busiest Premier League clubs in both the summer window and the January edition.

And it wouldn’t be surprising to see yet more big changes in the Tottenham ranks in the coming months.

Based on what we saw on Saturday, there’s certainly scope for Spurs to bring in more defensive reinforcements.

And one player now being linked with Tottenham has been deemed one of the most promising young defenders in the world.

Tottenham eyeing 22-year-old defender likened to Cristian Romero

The player in question is Bayer Leverkusen ace Piero Hincapie, who is set to lift the Bundesliga title in the coming weeks.

German football journalist Christian Falk has spoken about Tottenham’s interest in the 22-year-old Ecuador international.

“So far, the league leaders have a strong squad from positions one to 18,” the BILD journalist told CaughtOffside.

“If Jonathan Tah stays, another central defender may want to leave to play at another club: Piero Hincapie.

“The Ecuadorian is being courted by English clubs like Tottenham.

“Transfer fee: at least €40million (£34million), which Simon Rolfes and Xabi Alonso could immediately invest in the new team.”

Which legendary defenders have inspired Tottenham target Piero Hincapie?

Hincapie would be a great shout for a Tottenham side who’re on the right track for the most part but with a lot of work still needed.

The left-footer is a ‘fabulous‘ centre-back who the Bundesliga website has deemed ‘one of the most promising defenders in football’, likening him to Lucas Hernandez.

Hincapie himself has also spoken about how his brother has likened him to Tottenham’s own Cristian Romero, though he fancies himself more as a Carles Puyol or Sergio Ramos.

“On Fridays, when we travelled by bus for seven or eight hours to play for Independiente del Valle, I watched a lot of videos of Puyol and Sergio Ramos,” Hincapie told Scouted Football, via the Bundesliga website.

“I watched the videos so I wouldn’t get bored on the bus, and that’s when I realised that I really liked Puyol.

“He had a special way of playing, perhaps less technical than Ramos, but he was a leader and captain. One of the best centre-backs I’ve ever seen.”
