Report: 42-year-old manager was actually 'on the brink' of joining Liverpool but he suddenly changed his mind

Liverpool’s search for a new manager remains ongoing.

Jurgen Klopp announced his departure almost three months ago. The German will be leaving the club at the end of this season, which is a huge blow for everyone at Anfield.

The hunt for a new manager has been ongoing for over a couple of months now, and plenty of names have been linked with the Liverpool job.

Xabi Alonso appeared to be the favourite at one point, but he turned down a move. A report has now explained the real reason why.

What really made Xabi Alonso snub Liverpool?

Xabi Alonso was almost everyone’s first choice for the Liverpool job, wasn’t he?

The Spaniard, 42, has been doing a remarkable job at Bayer Leverkusen. His side could win the Bundesliga title tomorrow with five games to spare, which would be a tremendous achievement.

Alonso, a former Liverpool star, was viewed as the perfect man to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this summer, but he decided to snub that opportunity.

“I had a very good meeting and informed the club my decision to continue being the coach,” Alonso said last month.

“This is the right place for me to develop as a coach. I am a young coach and right now I feel this is the right place for me. The players have given me so many reasons to continue believing in the team. I feel my job is not over here.”

Football Transfers have now shared some more details about Alonso’s decision.

The report claims that the 42-year-old was actually ‘on the brink of a sensational return to Liverpool’. Talks between Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen’s chiefs had intensified to the point that a departure was expected by all parties.

But then, he changed his mind.

It has been revealed that Alonso told the Leverkusen board that he would be willing to stay if it was guaranteed that certain players would not be sold in the summer. It seems like that promise was made by the club.

As a result, the Spaniard decided to snub Liverpool and stay at Bayer Leverkusen for at least one more season.

Who is the favourite to become the next Liverpool manager?

It has been clear for a couple of weeks now that Xabi Alonso will not become the next Liverpool manager.

Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes have moved on, and a number of names have been linked with the Reds job over the last few weeks.

However, there is only one favourite as things stand.

Fabrizio Romano revealed a few days ago that Ruben Amorim is the frontrunner to become Liverpool’s next manager after Jurgen Klopp leaves this summer.

The 39-year-old, like Alonso, could win the league title this season, and reports have revealed that he could be available for as little as £8.5 million this summer.
