Liverpool are currently in pursuit of a new manager to replace Jurgen Klopp when he leaves Anfield at the end of the season.
The Reds have been linked with a number of high-profile coaches in recent months, but were sadly dealt a big blow in pursuit of one of their main targets.
Liverpool were said to be in pursuit of Anfield cult hero Xabi Alonso, but he has since revealed that he plans to remain with Bayer Leverkusen in the near future.
With that in mind, the Reds are having to look elsewhere, and several names are now doing the rounds on the rumour mill.
Ruben Amorim is arguably the most heavily linked manager, and recent speculation suggests he’s very much the frontrunner.
For instance, Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that the Reds have made contacts with people close to the Sporting Lisbon coach.
What has Paul Merson said about Liverpool and Ruben Amorim?
Now, Paul Merson has given his verdict on the prospect of Liverpool appointing Amorim, and he can certainly see it working out.
Merson, writing on Sportskeeda, said: “Ruben Amorim – I can see that. What he’s doing with Sporting is outstanding, he’s working under severe pressure and delivering.”
The Arsenal icon certainly thinks that Amorim is a better shout than Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, who he doesn’t feel is yet ready for a big club.
What could Liverpool fans expect from Ruben Amorim?
Amorim looks like a great shout for Liverpool, as he’s a young and extremely talented manager who has achieved a lot with Sporting. He looks like he has an incredibly bright future ahead of him.
And in terms of what Reds fans could expect from Amorim, Braga head of recruitment Paulo Meneses told The Athletic in 2022: “His playing style is clearly pragmatic.
“He is a studious coach, with a great capacity for work and a lot of intuition. In addition, he is a born leader, with great communication skills, both internally and externally.
“He is contagious with his will to win and with the conviction that only with hard work from everyone is this possible. Group work is really a crucial point of Ruben Amorim’s philosophy.”
