'There will be headlines': Liverpool warned not to appoint manager on their shortlist, he's 'not ready for a massive club'

Liverpool are currently in pursuit of a new manager to take over from Jurgen Klopp after he leaves Anfield at the end of the season.

The popular Reds boss has decided that he will vacate the Anfield hotseat once the season’s up.

Liverpool have been linked with a host of managers and, with Xabi Alonso ruling himself out of leaving Bayer Leverkusen, they’ve had to look elsewhere.

Two managers said to be on the Reds radar are Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Roberto De Zerbi.

The Guardian reported in March that Amorim, De Zerbi and Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann are all on the Liverpool shortlist.

Of those, De Zerbi is the manager most Premier League fans will be familiar with, thanks to his good efforts with the south coast club.

However, the 44-year-old has been struggling of late, with the Seagulls’ form tailing off in recent weeks.

What has Paul Merson said about Liverpool and Roberto De Zerbi?

Paul Merson, writing on Sportskeeda, believes De Zerbi is not yet ready for a big club, and would rather Amorim get the gig.

Roberto de Zerbi, I think teams have caught on with the way Brighton play,” wrote the pundit.

“I’d have been surprised if he got the Liverpool job, they need someone who is winning football matches week in and week out at the top level.

“If Liverpool drop points, there will be headlines in the newspapers.

“He’s still a good manager but I don’t think he’s ready for a massive club yet.”

Amorim certainly seems like a better shout for Liverpool than De Zerbi at this moment in time.

The Portuguese coach is routinely involved in title races and triumphant cup runs with Sporting.

Meanwhile, De Zerbi has got Brighton punching above their weight, but in terms of competing for major silverware, he’s inexperienced.

The Italian does have trophies on his CV – the Ukrainian Super Cup and the Serie C Italian Cup – but in that regard, the manager with one Portuguese title, three Portuguese League Cups and one Portuguese Super Cup is above him.

De Zerbi is an ‘amazing‘ coach, but perhaps he’d be better off going to a club where they’re not expected to challenge for the league and Europe every season first, but where there are hopes of silverware.

Somewhere like West Ham, Tottenham or Newcastle would be a good shout for De Zerbi, and if he does well there, then we can begin talking about Liverpool.
