‘It’s unfair’: Jamie Redknapp says one Man United player just doesn’t get the credit he deserves

Jamie Redknapp claimed that one Manchester United player receives ‘unfair’ criticism following yesterday’s draw at Bournemouth.

It was another frustrating 90 minutes for Erik ten Hag as Manchester United came from behind twice to secure a point at the Vitality Stadium.

The Red Devils missed an opportunity to capitalise on Tottenham’s heavy defeat at Newcastle as they were largely outplayed by the Cherries.

Following Dominic Solanke’s early opener, Bruno Fernandes levelled things up with a well-taken volley from close range.

Justin Kluivert quickly restored Bournemouth’s lead after being allowed far too much space down the left-hand side.

In truth, United were fortunate to head into the break just a goal behind as Andoni Iraola’s men continued to create opportunities. But if one United player can hold their head high following yesterday’s game it’s Fernandes.

The United skipper stepped up from the spot to earn Ten Hag’s men a point and also rattled the crossbar with an effort from range in the second half.

Redknapp says Bruno Fernandes doesn’t get the credit he deserves

Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp claimed that Fernandes receives ‘unfair’ criticism and feels the Portuguese star is one of very few United players that really care.

“He gets a lot of stick, Bruno,” the former Tottenham man said. “He gets a lot of stick from people. Some of it I get, I also think it’s unfair. When I watch him play, I see a player that genuinely cares.

“There’s a frustration, yes sometimes there’s pettiness, sometimes he’s calling out his players. But if I was coming into that club or if the manager keeps his job, he’s the sort of player you’d be looking to build the team around. He’s the player. He makes things happen.

“I see him try to order people around. But what the frustration comes from, I don’t think people care as much as he does. It’s like an epidemic at the club where people don’t really do enough. Do they really care? Do they go flying into tackles?

“He, on the other hand, does and I think he sometimes gets himself into situations that he perhaps shouldn’t. But he cares about the club, the team, he fought his team back into that game today.

“I know it’s a penalty for the goal but I just see a player you can build a team around and I don’t think there are too many others right now that are showing the kind of appetite he does.”

Fernandes stats vs Bournemouth

The 29-year-old received high praise following yesterday’s game, with Steve Nicol claiming most teams would love a player like him in their side.

After netting two goals at the Vitality Stadium, the numbers certainly reflect what was a standout performance from Fernandes.

The United skipper received the highest rating of any player on the pitch from WhoScored as he picked up an 8.4.

Fernandes netted twice from his three shots on goal yesterday, with his other effort coming off the woodwork.

The midfielder completed 80 per cent of his passes, won two aerial duels and two tackles.
