‘Not at the races’: Jamie Carragher claims £34m Liverpool player has been nowhere near his best for weeks now

Jamie Carragher claims a key Liverpool player just hasn’t been at the races in recent weeks.

Liverpool suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace today, with Jurgen Klopp’s men being made to rue their missed chances once again.

The Reds were well below-par in the opening 45 minutes and Palace headed into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.

Despite Liverpool’s improvements in the second half, they were unable to make the most of the chances they created.

Darwin Nunez failed to beat Dean Henderson just before the hour mark after the ball fell kindly to him inside the penalty area.

The Uruguayan received criticism after another wasteful display in the final third. But Nunez certainly wasn’t alone in that regard.

Indeed, Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones also wasted huge opportunities during the second half.

There were disappointing displays all over the pitch for Liverpool but Mohamed Salah was particularly quiet.

Carragher says Mohamed Salah is nowhere near his best

Salah struggled to get into the game today and unfortunately for Liverpool, none of their best chances fell his way.

One moment summed up the Egyptian’s performance as he attempted to switch the play by finding teammate Cody Gakpo.

The £34 million forward’s pass was short and easily cut out. Salah quickly regained possession but his first touch let him down, which led to another Palace attack.

And while speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of today’s game, Jamie Carragher made a claim about Salah’s recent form.

“He’s just not at the races, Mo Salah,” the Liverpool legend said. “It’s been like that for a few weeks now.”

Salah’s stats since return from injury

Liverpool were boosted by the return of Salah back in February following a hamstring injury he picked up at AFCON 2024.

The Egyptian star has managed three goals and one assist in six Premier League appearances since his return.

His numbers remain excellent but it has to be said that Salah just hasn’t been at his best in recent weeks.

Today’s defeat represents a huge dent in Liverpool’s title hopes but they remain in the mix with six games left to play.

Having Salah back at his best would be a huge boost for Klopp, particularly with his side struggling to take their chances of late.
