‘Brilliant’: Paul Merson left amazed after watching £60m player who Tottenham want to sign

Paul Merson has lauded a player who has been heavily linked with a switch to Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the summer.

Tottenham endured a miserable afternoon at St James’ Park on Saturday as they suffered a 4-0 defeat.

It was the heaviest defeat of the Ange Postecoglou era so far and indicated the Aussie still has plenty of work to do in north London.

With Spurs still firmly in the mix for a top-four finish, the summer transfer window already feels vital for Postecoglou.

Tottenham have made some astute signings since the Aussie’s arrival, with Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven and James Maddison all impressing in their debut campaigns.

But Postecoglou is yet to build a side in his image and we’re likely to see plenty of activity at Spurs this summer.

One player who has been continuously linked with a move to north London is Eberechi Eze.

The Englishman is said to be on Tottenham’s wish list ahead of the summer, with Manchester City also keen.

Eze put in an exceptional display at Anfield today and netted the winner as Crystal Palace picked up a shock 1-0 win.

Merson amazed by Tottenham target Eberechi Eze

Speaking on Sky Sports, Arsenal legend Paul Merson singled out Eze for praise after his cool finish earned Palace a surprise three points in Merseyside.

“Because of the way Eze just strolls into the box he catches nobody’s eye,” he said. “If he comes sprinting into the box at 100mph you get the centre-half who would come out.

“But it’s brilliant brilliant movement. Sometimes people want to run 100mph and they come in too quick but he just glided in there.”

Eze stats for Palace vs Liverpool

WhoScored handed Eze the Player of the Match as he earned an 8.3 rating.

The 25-year-old had two shots on goal on the day and netted once in the process. Eze also completed three dribbles and made three key passes.

While the £60 million England star mainly operates in a central role for Palace, it’s easy to see why Spurs are keen.

Postecoglou currently lacks a suitable back-up option for James Maddison and Eze would certainly fit the bill.

The talented Palace star is also comfortable while playing off the left-hand side, which is an area where Spurs are short of quality at the moment.
