N.J. man charged with slugging 2 cops during melee, police say

Authorities arrested a Warren County man on Sunday on charges he assaulted two police officers in Newark this past Friday, the Newark Police Department said.

Kahlil Cuttino, 31, of Phillipsburg, faces two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding police, obstruction and a rioting charge for the the 5 p.m. incident on the 300 block of Clinton Avenue.

Officers were on the block for a report of a man with a handgun and when they detained a man who fit the description of the gunman, a large crowd gathered, police said. Cuttino was among the rowdy onlookers and punched two officers, then managed to flee the scene.

Detectives investigating the incident identified him as a suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest on Saturday, police and records show.

The officers suffered injuries that required hospital treatment, but were not life threatening, police said.
