'That's a no no': Chris Sutton says Arsenal fans did something completely unacceptable this weekend

Chris Sutton has claimed that Arsenal fans did something completely unacceptable during the defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Arsenal suffered their first Premier League defeat of the calendar year at the hands of Unai Emery’s Villa.

The Gunners were undone by late goals from Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins, leaving them two points off the pace in the race for the title.

Mikel Arteta’s side failed to take their opportunities in the first half but they will be alarmed by a poor second-half display.

Villa completely dominated the game after the break and in the end, Emery was good value for three points on his return to north London.

The lacklustre performance from Arsenal certainly left supporters stunned as home fans began to leave the Emirates after Villa’s second of the game in the 87th minute.

Sutton criticises Arsenal fans following Villa defeat

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606, Sutton aimed a dig at Arsenal’s supporters after many left ahead of the full-time whistle yesterday.

“Chris Wise in commentary said that 30% of the stadium had emptied before the end of the game,” he said. “Arsenal fans, support your team. Why have they left early? They have had a brilliant game, get behind when they need you.

“Dear me. If you support your team, if you love your team. That’s not on, that’s a no, no. They can still win the title. You can’t give up Gooners.”

The atmosphere at the Emirates has been brilliant over the past couple of years but there was obvious tension as the game dragged on yesterday.

Arsenal’s second-half display didn’t exactly help to ease that tension and as Villa warmed to the task, it was apparent the game was heading one way.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa stats

For a side who are used to dominating the ball, Arsenal struggled to get a grip on the game yesterday.

Based on the statistics alone, Arsenal had a slight edge over Villa as they managed 51 per cent possession.

Arteta’s men produced 18 shots on goal in comparison to Villa’s 11.

The Gunners also created better quality chances on the day as they ended the game with a higher xG (1.87) than Villa (1.33).

But the Villains deserved to come away with three points off the back of a brilliant away performance.

Arteta will have to pick his players up ahead of a huge clash against Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Despite City having the advantage right now, there could yet be further twists to come and Arsenal will need to avoid a repeat of what happened last season.
