Carter Jonas and COEL will once again be hosting a T20 charity cricket match at Fenner’s – and former England star Devon Malcolm will be present.
The national property consultancy and design and fit-out specialist will host the game on Thursday, 6 June, at 1-7pm.
The event will raise funds for LandAid and The Phoenix Trust and the game is open to all.
LandAid is a nationwide property industry charity which sets out to end youth homelessness, while The Phoenix Trust is a local charity which provides meaningful work experience to young people and adults with a range of learning disabilities, including running a garden centre which manufactures paving slabs, crafts garden furniture, and hosts an online bakery service.
The match follows the success of the 2023 charity cricket day which attracted more than 500 people and raised £14,500 for the two charities.
With more than 800 attendees expected this year, the day will include live music, food and drink stalls on site and of course cricket, including the guest speaker, former England cricketer Devon Malcolm.
Devon was a fearsome fast bowler for England taking 144 wickets in 40 Tests and 10 one day internationals.
Few cricket fans will forget Devon’s 9-57 at The Oval in 1994. After being hit on the head by a bouncer, he uttered the immortal words “You guys are history” to the fielding South Africans, before dismantling their innings in one of the great Test bowling performances.
While raw pace earned him his place in the side, his famously eccentric batting at the bottom of the order seemed only to enhance his popularity with England fans.
He took more than 1,000 first class wickets, mainly for Derbyshire County Cricket Club, and his charismatic style endeared him to the public.
Since retiring from the game, Devon has kept busy and supports various charities including working with a Chance to Shine Charity which promotes youth cricket in England.
There has been a positive response to the rematch, with more than £16,000 having been raised already.
A flurry of interest in sponsorship has resulted in a host of companies signing up, including Ascot Lloyd, The Gonville Hotel, Howes Percival, The City Stay Group, Hive Group, Ensors, Tees Law, First Intuition, Liquidline, KMD Private Wealth Management, Stantec, Barnes Construction, Green Building Design, BDB Pitmans, Grovemere Property, Cam Alarms, The Cambridge Building Society, TOM &CO, Duct Systems, Vizion, Cambridge Industrial Properties, Top Road, Howard Group and Excel Carpentry. Workplace Risk Management is the first-aid sponsor.
A silent auction will also be hosted on the Carter Jonas website to help raise funds. Every penny given in sponsorship and via the silent auction will go directly to the two charities.
The vendors at the event include Cantab, Brewboard and Toni’s ices who have all agreed to give 10 per cent of their profits to the fundraising.
