'Not great': Jamie Carragher says Liverpool have a 'huge problem' forming now

Jamie Carragher feels Liverpool need to address a ‘huge problem’ to get back into the Premier League title race.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are just two points off the pace at the moment following a shock 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield on Sunday.

Fortunately for Liverpool, Arsenal slipped up later that day at home to Aston Villa. But both sides now face the task of chasing down Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The Reds have performed well above expectations this season but their recent form will be a cause for concern for Klopp.

Indeed, Liverpool have proven to be wasteful in front of goal of late, which also led to them dropping points at Old Trafford before the Palace defeat.

It’s led to criticism of their forward players, with Jamie Carragher labelling Darwin Nunez’s missed opportunity against Palace as ‘not good enough’.

And the Liverpool legend believes Klopp has a ‘huge problem’ when it comes to his side’s finishing.

Carragher on Liverpool’s problem

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher claimed that Liverpool need to address a lack of cutting edge in the final third to remain in the title race.

“It has to change,” he said. “I think Liverpool’s xG in this run is about nine and they have scored, which is not great and for it to just finish and go like that right now at the most pivotal of times is a huge problem for them.

“There is still time to fix that and get it back but I think the nature of the players, it will always be a bit like that. But that has to change very quickly if Liverpool are to get back into the title race.”

Liverpool stats vs Palace

While Liverpool were way below their best against Palace on Sunday, they put in an improved second-half display.

Klopp’s side created the necessary chances to win the game as they registered a total of 3.39 xG on the day.

The likes of Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones and Nunez all wasted opportunities in front of goal.

Liverpool certainly aren’t lacking firepower upfront but it’s an issue that Klopp’s side will have to address quickly.

If the Reds continue to waste opportunities in the final third, they will quickly fall behind in the race for the title.
