'Can I just say': Ian Wright has a point he wants to make about Anthony Gordon at Newcastle now

Ian Wright has issued his verdict on Anthony Gordon after the winger helped Newcastle United secure a massive victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

Newcastle are doing their best to end this difficult season on a real high. The Magpies have struggled with injuries throughout the campaign. And they were desperately unlucky to be knocked out of the Champions League at the group-stages.

There were questions about whether they were making enough progress. But their recent form has silenced a lot of their doubters.

Newcastle have won four of their last six league games, with the most emphatic performance of the lot coming on Saturday as they thrashed Tottenham 4-0 at St James’ Park.

Alexander Isak produced a world-class performance up front, scoring twice. But Anthony Gordon has also received praise for his display.

The 23-year-old scored one and set up two more in the win. He has now been directly involved in 20 goals in all competitions this season.

And speaking on Wrighty’s House, Ian Wright noted that Eddie Howe has to take so many plaudits for how good the former Everton man has become.

“Can I just say with Anthony Gordon, looking at a player who has gone somewhere and has blossomed, what Eddie Howe’s done for him,” he said.

“His movement in off the line. His finishing, his energy. We’re looking at a winger now who has firmly put himself in the picture for the Euros. Anthony Gordon looks like a problem. He’s a problem. He’s bringing seven out of 10 performances every week, eight, nines maybe. His consistency’s gone somewhere else. Eddie Howe’s got to take a lot of credit for the way he’s nurtured him into an England international.”

What many are already forgetting about Magpies winger

It is remarkable to see how good Gordon has been this season. It becomes easy to forget just how turbulent his first few months on Tyneside were.

The winger did not complete 90 minutes once after his January move last season. And he scored just one league goal after his switch from Goodison Park.

So it is amazing that he is now into double figures for league goals, and is heading that way with assists too.

And perhaps his form should encourage players such as Lewis Hall, who are still awaiting the chance to make a real impact on Tyneside.
