'Just missing one more thing': Dele Alli shares why Tottenham never became title contenders when he was there

Dele Alli has revealed what stopped Tottenham Hotspur from challenging for the Premier League title every year when he was at the club.

The Englishman spent seven years on Spurs’ books and was a phenomenal talent for large parts of it.

Alli, along with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son, produced a number of memorable performances, but despite their best efforts, Tottenham failed to win anything, let alone the Premier League title.

The 28-year-old has now delivered his verdict on the reason why Tottenham couldn’t compete for the league on a regular basis during Mauricio Pochettino‘s years at the club.

Dele Alli explains what stopped Tottenham from challenging for the Premier League

Tottenham had a fantastic few years when Mauricio Pochettino was at the helm, didn’t they?

The Argentine played brilliant attacking football. His sides were a joy to watch for Spurs fans, and he got Harry Kane, Heung-min Son and Dele Alli all firing together.

There were several stages when Tottenham looked like had what it takes to really push for the Premier League title, but it never happened.

The closest they came was in the 2016/17 season, but they still finished seven points behind Chelsea, who won the title under Antonio Conte that campaign.

Alli knows what went wrong for Tottenham in all those seasons better than everyone else, and he has now revealed the reason why Spurs never managed to challenge for the title.

He claimed on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football last night that Tottenham’s players and staff always felt they were one big signing away from becoming title contenders, but Daniel Levy could never find that player for the squad.

Alli said: “We felt as a team, players as and as manager we felt that we were just missing one more thing to really push us into title contenders every year.”

Carragher asked: “Are you talking about a specific player or mentality?”

Alli replied: “Maybe a bit of both. We wanted to see the one more player come in who was going to really push us.”

Tottenham need to improve one thing to challenge for the title

Ange Postecoglou‘s arrival at Tottenham has been a breath of fresh air.

The Australian has completely transformed the club, and despite the terrible result at the weekend against Newcastle, there are a lot of positives to take.

Tottenham are scoring goals, they always look a threat and the style of play is bringing the best out of their players.

However, defensively, they have been really poor.

Tottenham have conceded 49 goals in 32 games in the Premier League so far this season. That is a shocking record, and what makes it worse is the fact that they are overperforming their xGA.

Spurs’ overall xGA this season is 59.15, which means they should’ve actually conceded 10 more goals than they have done (Understat).

Until Postecoglou fixes that, Tottenham will not be serious challengers to the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool for the Premier League title.
