'Not top class': ESPN pundit says two Liverpool players just aren't good enough for what Klopp asks of them

Liverpool failed to beat Crystal Palace yesterday and put the title in the hands of Manchester City.

The Reds missed a number of big chances once again as they simply failed to find the net as the likes of Darwin Nunez, Mo Salah, and Curtis Jones all missed big chances.

It means that the Reds have endured a potentially season changing week where they were hammered in Europe and potentially surrendered the title at the same time.

Of course, like so many games recently, Liverpool would have won the game had they put their chances away.

It’s becoming a recurring theme for Liverpool, especially Darwin Nunez, who seems to be making a habit of missing big chances in big moments.

However, it’s not just down to Nunez.

And according to ESPN pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft, Luis Diaz is just as culpable when it comes not being a top class forward.

Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez are not ‘top class’ strikers

Speaking on the ESPN FC show after the game last night, former Norway striker Fjortoft suggested that both Diaz and Nunez are not going to deliver the goals Liverpool need.

“Against Manchester United, they had ten chances. Against Crystal Palace, I agree with the boys, maybe not the best play, but they still created ten chances. And let’s be honest, Nunez is not a top, top class striker. Diaz is not a top class striker. They are great players, they are fun to watch, they’ve got energy when they’re on top of their game. But they’re not a goal scorer who you think is going to get 20 goals, no chance,” Fjortoft said.

“I think this weekend you saw how both Arsenal and Liverpool are lacking that 1-0 striker. That striker who you know gives you that goal. It happened for Liverpool against Man United and it happened against Palace.”

Liverpool need a new number nine to be the best

While Darwin Nunez is a player with potential, we can’t keep saying this nearly two years into his career at Liverpool.

A quick look across to Manchester City shows that someone like Erling Haaland can make all the difference.

That’s not to say Liverpool can simply go out and find a player like Haaland. But on the whole, they need to go and get a number nine who knows how to find the back of the net.

Darwin Nunez is, on his day, a massive handful. But the chances are being missed too often now.

As for Diaz, it’s not really fair to tarnish him with the same brush given he plays out wide.
