Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg may have been given more incentive to leave Tottenham if transfer rumour is true - opinion

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to make a number of signings this summer with European football on the horizon and in-turn, players will need to be sold – and one of those could be Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

With Spurs sitting in fifth place and in with a shout of fourth, Ange Postecoglou will know he needs to bring in a few players to add depth to his Tottenham side this summer in order to compete on all fronts.

The likes of Albert Gudmundsson, Santiago Gimenez and plenty of other players are being linked with a move to London in the summer. Their success could depend on which European competition they are in.

A new report this week claims Tottenham are interested in signing Boca Juniors talent Cristian Medina. The 21-year-old is starring over in Argentina, already clocking up a huge 138 senior Boca appearances.

Tottenham eye Cristian Medina as he shines at Boca Juniors

A player that Sergio Aguero said is “spectacular” earlier this year, and a player that broke Rodrigo Bentancur’s record of most appearances for Boca having broke through their academy, in the last decade.

A holding midfielder, or a no.6, Medina is renowned for his work rate in midfield. His ability to cover the grass and make tackles, disrupting play and then working the ball through transitions, to the final third.

Plenty of energy and aggression, he has had a hand in 17 goals in his 138 games. Should Spurs make a move for Medina, it is surely a sign that Tottenham are planning for life without Denmark star Hojbjerg.

Hojbjerg is that kind of midfielder. Currently ‘not happy’ with his game time at Spurs and about to enter the last 12 months of his contract, Hojbjerg is renowned for his defensive work and passing in transition.

Medina interest a sign that surely, Hojbjerg will leave Tottenham

But, he is edging towards 30 and Spurs will be in the market for a younger replacement. Medina could have been identified as the man they want to sign as a replacement for Hojbjerg, in the coming months.

What Medina gives Tottenham that would see him overtake Hojbjerg, is that he has actually pretty quick for a centre-midfielder. Slightly smaller, aiding a greater centre of gravity – more agile than Hojbjerg.

But mostly, he is only 21 – almost eight years younger than Hojbjerg who turns 29 in August. The reports of Tottenham’s interest in Medina is a clear sign Spurs are planning for life without the £110k-a-week ace.

Falling further down the pecking order, surely it is even more proof that Hojbjerg will choose to leave Tottenham in the summer – or, that Tottenham will decide to cash in on the former Southampton man.
