'Didn't put a foot wrong': Alan Shearer thought £26m Aston Villa player was flawless against Arsenal

Alan Shearer has now been praising one individual Aston Villa performance in the seismic win against Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.

Unai Emery’s side are now preparing for a second leg against LOSC Lille in buoyant mood, rightfully believing they can couple European success with a fourth place finish in the Premier League.

Thanks to that late but deserved win against Arsenal, Villa are now three points clear of Tottenham Hotspur, having played once more.

But when you compare the fixtures the two sides have left, it perhaps feels as if Emery’s team are in the driving seat.

Villa have seen a very steady evolution this season, and a new back four seems to have emerged as a result.

Earlier in the season it would be pretty unthinkable that Matty Cash would be regularly watching on from the bench, but Unai Emery has found an excellent balance.

And with a fit Diego Carlos in the side, Villa really do have one of the most imposing back lines in the country.

Alan Shearer thought Villa defender Diego Carlos was absolutely perfect against Arsenal

Of course, the £26m-defender was the star of the show against Arsenal, perhaps delivering his best performance of the season.

And despite the majority of his teammates waiting until the second half to come alive, Diego Carlos was at it from the off.

That being said, the Brazilian was deservedly handed a spot in Alan Shearer’s ‘Team of the Week’.

Shearer, who surprisingly didn’t include any other Aston Villa players, thought Carlos really frustrated Arsenal.

He wrote: “Another player who frustrated some top attacking players who are chasing the title. He didn’t put a foot wrong in Aston Villa’s outstanding win at Arsenal.”

Of course, it’s so rewarding to see Diego Carlos reaching these levels once again given the severity of the injury he did previously suffer.

Having ruptured his Achilles tendon last season, there wasn’t any guarantee that the 31-year-old would still be able to contribute like this.

But having recovered in some style, the Brazilian could soon add to his 17 Champions League appearances with Aston Villa next season.

All that being said, Jack Grealish and Leon Bailey were left in awe of a different performance on Sunday.
