'His worst game in a Spurs shirt': Pundit claims one Tottenham player had a complete 'nightmare' at Newcastle

Robbie Mustoe has suggested that one player had their worst game in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt at the weekend as Ange Postecoglou’s men were torn apart by Newcastle.

Spurs fans will surely have reservations about making plans to travel to Tyneside next season. Once again, the club were on the receiving end of a hammering at St James’ Park.

It is a performance Postecoglou will surely be wanting to move on from as soon as possible. But there is no doubt that Tottenham have not been as impressive in the second-half of the season.

James Maddison has been poor for a little while. Meanwhile, Timo Werner has come in for criticism. But perhaps the most surprising performance came at the other end of the pitch.

Micky van de Ven has been absolutely exceptional since his arrival in the summer. But the Dutchman falling over in the build-up to the opening goal perhaps summed up the centre-back’s nightmare day.

Speaking on The 2 Robbies, Robbie Mustoe noted that he had talked up van de Ven before the game, only to be left stunned by his performance against the Magpies.

“On field, he’s been superb, one of the best signings of the season. And I’m sorry, I put a curse on these players. He had an absolute shocker. He had a nightmare. It was his worst game in a Spurs shirt. Slipping over, getting caught out of position for Isak’s second goal,” he said.

What many already forget about Micky van de Ven

Van de Ven has been so important to how Tottenham play. He allows the side to squeeze opposition teams because he is more than likely going to be able to deal with any ball over the top.

So it was surprising just how easily Alexander Isak got away from him for his second goal of the afternoon.

However, it is arguably often overlooked just how young van de Ven is. There were always going to be times when the 22-year-old would struggle.

Isak has been one of the best strikers in the league this season, too. So there is no shame in having a difficult day against the Swede.

Van de Ven has the tools to put things right quickly. But the high-risk strategy Tottenham use means that these days are going to happen from time to time.
