Where are they now? Greenwood, 51-capped Man Utd man & Bundesliga winner feature in last U18 squad to win the league

Manchester United’s current U18s are champions of the Premier League North – but what happened to the last side to achieve the same feat?

Manchester United’s side lifted the U18 Premier League trophy on Tuesday. They beat Wolves 2-1 away from home.

A Gabriele Biancheri double was enough to give Adam Lawrence’s team of superstars the title. They become the first U18 Red Devils academy side to do so since the 2017-18 campaign. That team also had a plethora of superstars.

So what happened to them? Here are the standout players from that campaign and how their careers have panned out so far.

Teden Mengi left Manchester United in the summer of 2023 and hasn’t looked back since. He is now a Premier League regular for Luton Town – having a star-studded 23/24 campaign.

Mengi has deserved all his successes – which also involves a first-ever call-up to the England youth sides.

Brandon Williams can be regarded as somewhat of a success. He has featured 51 times for the Red Devils.

Williams is still at Manchester United. Just. He’s been on loan to Kieran Mckenna‘s Ipswich Town in the 23/24 campaign – but has struggled for game time. He’ll likely be sold next season.

Matej Kovar

Matej Kovar has enjoyed the most success. He already has two league titles to his name. He won the league with Sparta Prague whilst on loan, before earning a transfer permanently to Bayer Leverkusen – who have just been crowned the winners of the German Bundesliga.

Leaving Manchester United appears to be the best thing he’s ever done – although the 23-year-old’s career is still just getting started.

Ethan Laird

Ethan Laird never really made his mark in red. Despite making his first-team debut for the club in a UEFA Europa League game in November 2019 – he wasn’t really given a fair shot.

However, he’s since then established himself as an integral player for Birmingham City and arguably one of the Championship’s best right-backs.

James Garner

Another success story. James Garner is a regular in the Premier League for Everton. Manchester United also obtained £15m for his services. He played just seven times for the Red Devils.

Tahith Chong

Tahith Chong, alongside Mengi, is a regular at Luton Town. He also enjoyed a successful loan spell at Birmingham.

Ultimately, he was deemed surplus to requirements by Erik ten Hag, which probably was the right choice.

Mason Greenwood

The big one. Mason Greenwood also featured in this star-studded squad. As we all know, his Manchester United career has taken an entirely different trajectory in the past few years.

Greenwood is currently seriously impressing in La Liga with Getafe. Who knows what will happen next season?

Angel Gomes

Last but not least, an argument for the ‘one that got away’ – Angel Gomes. He was arguably the club’s highest-rated prospect during the 2017-18 season, and it now shows.

He’s a Ligue 1 superstar with Lille, cementing himself as a vital player for the French outfit.
