Club confirms appointment of manager linked with Sunderland this season, he'll take charge in June

A manager linked with Sunderland this season has now been confirmed as the next Aberdeen boss.

Aberdeen made headlines recently for making Neil Warnock their new manager, and then sacking him after just eight games.

It was a forgettable spell for the English Football League veteran who is now without a club.

And whilst he may have been in the running for the Sunderland job once upon a time, the club are now looking for someone much fresher in the game.

The Black Cats continue to be linked with Reims boss Will Still who is less than half Warnock’s age at 31 years old.

Sunderland also like Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl, who is the EFL’s youngest boss at 34.

There’s been a horde of names linked with the Sunderland manager job this season.

Of course, there’s been two separate sackings at the Stadium of Light this season; Tony Mowbray in the December and Michael Beale in the February.

Beale left Sunderland with the second shortest reign of any previous manager, lasting just 12 games.

Names like Marek Papszun in Poland have been mentioned alongside Sunderland.

The Black Cats have been linked with a few obscure European managers who’ve made impressive achievements in their respective countries.

Another being Jimmy Thelin.

Thelin, 46, is manager of Swedish outfit IF Elfsborg.

He’s been there since 2018 and has overseen 213 games with 100 wins to his name.

He’s achieved consistent league finishes in the Swedish top flight and has done so playing attractive football with a group of younger players.

After Sunderland sacked Mowbray earlier this season, Thelin was quickly linked.

And after missing on a potential move to Wearside, Thelin has now landed the Aberdeen job; the Scottish outfit confirmed the news on X on Tuesday afternoon.

Thelin will take charge in the summer.

Why Jimmy Thelin may never have been in the running for Sunderland

Sunderland have set a trend with their last few managerial appointments.

Under Kyril Louis-Dreyfus anyway, all of Lee Johnson, Alex Neil, Mowbray and then Beale were out of work when they took the Sunderland job.

And fans are starting to expect another similar appointment with former Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom looking like a leading contender at this moment in time.

Kristjaan Speakman previously hinted at Sunderland potentially paying out a compensation fee for someone like Still or Rohl, though seemed to suggest that the club’s preference would be an available coach.

So Thelin, whilst he may have an impressive CV and a new challenge in the summer, may never have been that realistic of a Sunderland manager contender.
