‘Overpriced’: Tim Sherwood says he thought £40m Newcastle man was a bad signing, but he was wrong

Newcastle United became the richest club in the world back in 2021, but their spending since then hasn’t been as extravagant as you may expect.

Don’t get us wrong, the Magpies have spent their fair share of cash, but, at the same time, they’ve not gone after the biggest of names, instead signing young, exciting talents who can develop.

Newcastle haven’t signed a bona fide ‘superstar’ as of yet, and, at times, their transfer strategy has been called into question.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Tim Sherwood has been discussing one Newcastle signing that he was initially sceptical of, and he says that he was very wrong about this player.

Tim Sherwood was wrong about Newcastle signing

Sherwood spoke about Anthony Gordon, admitting that he thought he was overpriced when he first signed, but he has since been proven wrong.

“He’s done very well, when he first went there I thought he was overpriced, but he’s worked with the manager, he’s put him in at the right time and taken him out at the right time. The crowd have taken to him and when the crowd take to you there you feel like a million dollars and he’s relishing the challenge of playing for such a big club,” Sherwood said.

Anthony Gordon looked overpriced

We can absolutely understand Sherwood here.

Let’s be honest, Gordon didn’t look like a £40m player when he was at Everton.

He was lacking quality and lacking end product during his time at Goodison Park, but that’s the beauty of Eddie Howe.

Howe spotted something in Gordon, and now, we’re seeing the fruits of his coaching labour as the winger has arguably been one of the very best players in the Premier League this season.

The future is bright for Newcastle, and while these sorts of signings are expensive, they can seriously pay off if you find the right player.
