‘He didn’t’: Ian Wright says he thought £6m Arsenal player was going to tear Aston Villa apart

Arsenal didn’t turn up against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The north London club really didn’t make anything happen against the Villans at the weekend, and they were beaten 2-0, potentially ending their title hopes.

Arsenal headed into this game as favourites – the Gunners have been ridiculously good at home as of late, while Villa have been on the decline.

However, for one reason or another, Arsenal weren’t at their best this weekend, and speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, Ian Wright has noted that he was rather disappointed by one player in particular on Sunday.

Ian Wright disappointed by Arsenal player

Wright spoke about Arsenal’s performance and how he expected more from Gabriel Martinelli on the day.

“We were unrecognisable in that second half with some of the decisions that were being made. I would’ve thought that would’ve been a good game for Martinelli to stretch them with that high line, Havertz did it a few times so you thought that Martinelli might’ve got a lot of joy in that respect, but he didn’t,” Wright said.

Gabriel Martinelli should’ve had a field day against Aston Villa

We can absolutely understand why Wright expected Martinelli to turn up on Sunday.

One of the Brazilian’s most important attributes is his pace, and against a team like Aston Villa, that should be a key weapon.

Indeed, Unai Emery’s side usually play with a ridiculously high line, and if you can beat that offside trap, you’re basically in on goal.

However, Emery’s side played this game brilliantly in a defensive sense, and, to be honest, the £6m Arsenal star wasn’t at his best.

This result will undoubtedly be pivotal in the race for the Premier League title, and we may well look back on this game as the match that ultimately cost Arsenal the league.
