'A viable option': Chansiri told to sign 'brilliant' EFL man at Sheffield Wednesday, he'll cost £750k

Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer wants to see the Owls sign this Championship star in the summer.

Sheffield Wednesday will certainly need new bodies through the doors at Hillsborough in the summer.

Once again, owner Dejphon Chansiri has allowed for almost half of his first-team players to be either out of contract in the summer, or coming to the end of their loan spells.

It’ll leave Danny Rohl or his successor with a huge rebuilding task in the pre-season and yet another shoestring budget, if any budget at all.

Expect the Owls to raid the free market as well as the loan market.

But if Sheffield Wednesday beat the drop then Chansiri could be inclined to spend a bit of money, in a bid to keep Rohl happy in S6.

And speaking to Football League World in a recent interview, former Owls midfielder and now pundit Palmer has urged Chansiri to bring in Rotherham United goalkeeper Viktor Johansson this summer.

Palmer said:

“There are a lot of Premier League clubs after him, but would Johansson be a first-choice there? I doubt it.

“He should want to be a first-team keeper. He doesn’t want to be sitting on the bench, so he shouldn’t move anywhere where he would be a second-choice.

“Should Sheffield Wednesday retain their Championship status, that would be a viable option for him, with Sheffield United another.

“He’s going to have a lot of clubs after him. Would he be a good signing for either Sheffield club? Absolutely. Whoever signs Johansson gets a very, very good goalkeeper.”

Johansson, 25, is the no.1 choice goalkeeper with Sheffield Wednesday’s South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United.

He’s recently seen his side relegated to League One but Johansson has earned praise this season, currently topping the Championship for saves (175, with John Ruddy in 2nd on 141).

Despite having only four clean sheets to his name, the Swedish international has managed to stand out in an otherwise dire Rotherham outfit.

Recent reports have credited Sheffield United with an interest, also revealing that Johansson has a £750,000 release clause.

Former Millers boss Paul Warne described Johansson as a ‘brilliant’ goalkeeper.

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper crisis

Sheffield Wednesday certainly look like they’ll need at least one new goalkeeper in the summer.

And the Owls may need an experienced no.1 too, like Johansson, with Cameron Dawson out of contract and tipped to leave, and James Beadle set to return to parent club Brighton.

Like Palmer says, Johansson may feel like another Championship move is his best bet, and if he’s settled in Rotherham than a move to Hillsborough could be ideal.

But he may feel like he should be playing further up the second tier table next season; the Owls look like they might struggle again, if they beat the drop.

What’s more, Sheffield Wednesday spending £750k on one player this summer, when a horde will be needed, feels unlikely.
