5 ex-Sheffield Wednesday players out of contract this summer, including star who was axed via text

Another shed load of Sheffield Wednesday players will see their contracts expire this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are synonymous with big summer transfer windows.

Often times they find themselves needing to buy a whole new first-team but this coming summer could be their biggest yet.

Dejphon Chansiri has somehow allowed for at least eight key first-team players to run out of contract in the summer along with the loan contingency.

Danny Rohl or whoever the next boss might be will surely have their work cut out.

But the Owls could find some luck in the free agent market and in some of their former players, as they have done fairly often.

Here are six former Sheffield Wednesday players set to become free agents in the summer…

Former Chelsea youngster Sam Hutchinson has already had two spells with Sheffield Wednesday, finding out his original spell was set to end via text.

After a brief spell in Cyprus he returned to the UK with the Owls during the 2021/22 campaign but would become a free agent once again.

He’s now in the second year of a two-year deal with Reading in League One and currently set to see his contract expire in the summer.

Adam Reach

Adam Reach is currently battling for promotion to the Premier League with West Brom.

The scorer of several spectacular goals during his time in S6, Reach is very much a back-up player for the Baggies, with injury also limiting him to just 16 appearances in the Championship this season.

In three years at West Brom, Reach has made 68 league appearances, scoring just two goals and claiming only three assists as well.

Connor Wickham

Connor Wickham is another player who’s had multiple spells at Sheffield Wednesday, having joined the club on loan on three separate occasions.

The big striker was let go by Cardiff City last summer and after half-a-season out of the game, he joined Charlton Athletic on a deal until the summer.

Since, the 31-year-old has scored one in three for the Addicks.

Joe Wildsmith

Former Owls goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith is currently set to become a free agent in the summer.

He’s Derby County’s no.1 goalkeeper playing 46 times in League One fixtures last season and having racked up 38 appearances so far this season.

He’s kept an impressive 18 clean sheets for the Rams who are eyeing up automatic promotion to the Championship.

Michael Hector

Now a teammate of Wickham’s at Charlton, Michael Hector was a huge favourite among Sheffield Wednesday fans following his 2018/19 campaign at Hillsborough.

He was on loan from Chelsea but was let go, then let go by their West London neighbours Fulham in 2022.

Hector also spent time out of the game before returning with Charlton, having racked up 32 League One appearances this season.
