'If only...': Journalist highlights Sheffield Wednesday mistake in January that could send them down

Dom Howson has named the one big mistake Sheffield Wednesday made that could send them down.

Sheffield Wednesday were held to a 1-1 draw by Stoke City yesterday, having briefly climbed out of the relegation zone as they took the lead in the second half.

With Blackburn, Birmingham and Huddersfield all picking up points this weekend, it was an incredibly frustrating afternoon for the Owls.

Danny Rohl‘s side will now have to rely on his team putting on performances against Blackburn, West Brom and Sunderland if they are to avoid relegation this month.

Wednesday could rue their missed chances if they are to drop down to League One, with the side dominating much of the game against the Potters.

The hosts had 15 shots against their relegation rivals, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net when it was most needed.

Rohl’s side have failed to score on seven occasions since the turn of the year, costing them vital points in winnable games.

One reason why Sheffield Wednesday could get relegated

With their lack of goal threat proving to be a real issue for Wednesday, journalist Dom Howson has now named the mistake they have made that could cost them their place in the Championship.

He wrote on X: “Wednesday have tried to force the issue. Thought they were very good in the opening 15 minutes. Lacked a cutting edge. If only they had signed another striker in January.”

What should the Owls have done in January?

Sheffield Wednesday have definitely struggled in front of goal all season and some of their missed chances are probably the reason they are where they are.

However, they did sign Ike Ugbo in January and he had looked to be a really good signing after scoring six goals in five games, however he has since struggled to replicate that form and is now without a goal in his last seven.

If Ugbo had been able to keep up that form then the club could well be out of the relegation zone, but they just haven’t had the luck.

Wednesday did try to sign Duncan McGuire and failed, at which point there seemed to be very few options of players they could tempt to come to Hillsborough for a relegation battle.

A free agent signing such as Dwight Gayle – who eventually joined Derby County – may have been their only real option, and that would have been a huge risk given his underwhelming spell with Stoke City.
