£26m Aston Villa star overcame 'a big problem' to now become a 'monster' for Unai Emery - opinion

One Aston Villa player has overcome a “big problem” to become a key figure under Unai Emery this season.

In what has been an incredible campaign, it’s hard to single out one star player. Ollie Watkins’ transformation under Emery has been nothing short of remarkable. The Englishman can easily be classed among the best strikers on the planet based on his current form.

John McGinn’s versatility under the Spaniard has also caught the eye. The Scot produces tenacious performances week in and week out. Leon Bailey’s turnaround should also be commended.

Fortunately for the aforementioned players, injuries haven’t, for the most part, tarnished their long-term prospects in the West Midlands.

Diego Carlos signed for the Villans in 2022 but saw his season shattered after rupturing his Achilles. It’s been a long road back for the Brazilian, and now the Villa Park faithful are beginning to see his full potential.

The £26million signing has even admitted he had to overcome a “big problem” during his fledgling days in the West Midlands. Speaking to Aston Villa’s media channels after the 2-0 win over Arsenal, the 31-year-old said: “It’s my second time as Player of the Match and I’m very happy because I work hard every day.

“I’m very happy with this moment because I had a big problem last season. Now, I have a good sensation with my body and I’m feeling confident,” he said.

“I came back stronger in my head and in my body. I’m very happy with everything.”

Villa are now seeing the best of the former Sevilla defender. He appears to have complete confidence in his body and produced a colossal defensive performance at The Emirates.

The man “mountain” was given the Man of the Match award by Gary Neville and lauded by pundits far and wide. Talking on Sky Sports commentary, the former Manchester United right-back said: “He’s been Villa’s best player in the first half. Diego Carlos, he’s been immense.”

“Diego Carlos, outstanding in that first half. A clean sheet, he’s been outstanding. In the first half, he was a man mountain.”

It was an eye-catching performance, and all eyes now be on how Emery lines up against Lille on Thursday. Managing the Brazilian’s minutes will be necessary, but it’s hard to see how he can be dropped after his performance on Sunday.

After Jonathan David and Hákon Arnar Haraldsson caused problems in the first leg, a solid defensive display is required if Emery’s men want to secure safe passage through to the Conference League semi-final.
