'Clinical' gem & promotion winner: 3 players Sheffield Wednesday could sign to replace Poveda - opinion

Here are three wingers that Sheffield Wednesday could look to sign as Ian Poveda’s replacement if they are relegated.

Sheffield Wednesday are approaching their final three matches of the campaign, still one point adrift from safety.

With fixtures against Blackburn, West Brom and Sunderland coming up,Danny Rohl may need to pull off a ‘miracle’ to keep them up now.

If the Owls are relegated then they can expect to lose a lot of key players, with many of them set to see their contract expire this summer.

The club had been hopeful that they could potentially sign the likes ofIan Poveda and Ike Ugbo permanently if they avoided the drop, but that is unlikely if they are playing League One football next term.

Poveda has now been sidelined for the last two games with an injury and could well have played his last match for the Owls, which could see him return to Leeds United this summer.

The Colombian’s contract at Elland Road does expire at the end of the season, but there is surely no chance he would move down to the third tier.

If Wednesday are relegated then they are going to have to bring in some attacking reinforcements to replace the loanee, while they could also lose Josh Windass on a free transfer too.

Here are three attackers that could replace Ian Poveda if they are relegated…

Femi Azeez

Femi Azeez joined Reading from Wealdstone in 2019 and he went onto score 10 goals in 17 games for the U23s, forcing his way into the first team.

The ‘clinical’ youngster struggled to make an impact in the Championship, but their relegation to League One has seen him become a key player for The Royals.

Azeez now has seven goals and eight assists this season and has scored key goals that has prevented back-to-back relegations.

Plymouth tried to sign the 22-year-old in January and failed, but he could now be available on a free transfer this summer as he approaches the end of his contract at the Madejski Stadium.

Wes Burns

Wes Burns has played an important role in Ipswich Town’s rise from League One, having joined them in 2021.

The winger has five goals and three assists in the Championship this term, while he also win the EFL Goal of the Season.

While he has been a regular for the Tractor Boys, if they are to win promotion this season then he could really struggle for game-time.

It might be an ambitious move for a League One club, but Burns’ stats in the third tier are very attractive.

The 29-year-old netted 20 goals and provided 17 assists in 79 games for Ipswich.

With his contract set to expire in 2025, Town could potentially look to move him on this summer, though he is also likely to attract interest from the Championship.

Sonny Perkins

Sonny Perkins joined Leeds United’s academy from West Ham in 2022 and has since come under heavy praise, making his debut in the EFL Cup as an 18 year old.

The youngster bagged 12 goals in 20 games for the U21s last season, before earning his league debut against Cardiff in August.

Perkins went onto join Oxford United on a season-long loan, but managed only three substitute appearances before he was recalled by the Whites in January.

The 20-year-old could well be sent out on loan again this summer and Wednesday could look to snap him up. If he is given a chance to replicate his U21s form then he could be a solid signing for the Owls.
