'Love it': Josh Windass reacts as former Sheffield Wednesday ace secures back-to-back promotions

Josh Windass has sent a five-word message to his former Sheffield Wednesday teammate after he secured his second promotion in as many years.

While Sheffield Wednesday may well plunge straight back down into League One, the club and its fans certainly won’t forget the thrill of winning promotion last season anytime soon.

The Owls put on one of the most unbelievable comebacks in play-off history after losing 4-0 in the semi-final first leg to Peterborough United.

They looked destined for another year in the third tier and Darren Moore came under heavy criticism, but those supporters were left to apologise when Wednesday pulled off a spectacular 5-1 win at Hillsborough that resulted in a penalty shoot-out.

Wednesday then went onto narrowly win at Wembley thanks to a late Josh Windass goal, securing them a place in the Championship in style.

One of the players who played an important role in their dramatic comeback was Aden Flint, who began the 5-1 win on the bench.

The defender was brought on in the 92nd minute, and it was only four minutes later that he nodded down Marvin Johnson’s cross to Liam Palmer, who took the game to extra-time.

Flint only spent a matter of months at Hillsborough after joining from Stoke City in January 2023, making only 16 starts. However, he will be forever etched in Wednesday’s history.

While the 34-year-old got involved in the celebrations, it wasn’t long before he left the Owls to join Mansfield Town in League Two.

The centre-back took to social media to share his delight, while his former teammate Josh Windass also congratulated him on consecutive promotions.

Writing on his Instagram story, Windass said: “Back to back @adenflint4. Love it.”

Flint extended his contract with Mansfield in January, so will be part of the team that plays in League One next season.

Wednesday’s future in the second tier remains in doubt, but they could well come up against Flint next season if they are relegated.

Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion seems a world away

It is great to see Windass celebrating Flint’s success and also remembering our own promotion fondly, as it is sometimes easy to forget how recently that was.

The Owls were at the top of the world when they won at Wembley, but Moore’s exit and Xisco Munoz’s arrival brought supporters crashing back down very quickly.

The whole situation was handled very poorly last summer, but the only way they can make up for it now is if they manage to keep hold of Danny Rohl.

Whatever league Wednesday are in, the German is the right man to take the club forward.
