'I promise...': Will Vaulks' pledge to 'unbelievable' Sheffield Wednesday fans ahead of Blackburn

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Will Vaulks has made a promise to fans ahead of the relegation crunch match vs Blackburn Rovers this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday have just three games of their season left, and as things stand, a one point gap to Birmingham City in 21st.

There’s still everything to play for in the Championship.

Only Sunderland in 13th are mathematically safe from relegation with every team below them still needing points to get over the line.

Sheffield Wednesday go into this weekend’s game at Ewood Park on the back of a 1-1 draw vs Stoke City last weekend.

Liam Palmer gave the Owls the lead but Stoke struck back soon after, leaving Danny Rohl‘s side with just one win in their last seven games.

Sheffield Wednesday have games against Blackburn Rovers, West Brom, and Sunderland.

The game vs West Brom is the only one of those three at Hillsborough, whilst the upcoming game vs Rovers is by far the most winnable of those three fixtures.

John Eustace’s side currently sit in 17th and now five points above the drop zone after losing just two of their last eight in the Championship.

Last time these two teams met was in December last year, with the Owls winning 3-1.

This weekend, Sheffield Wednesday will be taking a maximum away allocation of 7,000 to Ewood Park.

And speaking to BBC Sheffield reporter Rob Staton ahead of the weekend, Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Will Vaulks has given his rallying cry.

The Welshman said:

“I think the fans have been unbelievable this year. They’ve stuck by us. They’ve clapped us off the pitch when we’ve been poor. They’ve cheered us on. The atmosphere at the weekend against Stoke was brilliant. I know we fell short in the end with the draw, but once were ahead, Hillsborough just gets rocking. And we really need you. And I know it probably feels a bit cheeky of a player, second bottom in the league to ask for more support, but if you can give us it, I promise you, it can get us over the line.”

Reacting to the 7,000 Sheffield Wednesday fans making their way to Lancashire on Sunday, Vaulks added:

“The atmosphere at Blackburn will be unbelievable in the away end. I’m under no doubt that will happen. All I can say is we’ll give everything for three games.”

Three huge games for more than one person

Sheffield Wednesday arguably haven’t had a more important game or upcoming run of fixtures since they were in the Championship play-offs.

Earning promotion from League One was a good feat, though there’s a sense that staying in the Championship this season would be greater.

It could mean keeping hold of Rohl, which could in turn mean keeping the bulk of the out of contract players and having a squad to build on in the summer, let alone the coaching staff that would inevitably stay in Rohl does so.

And this Blackburn game, being the most winnable of the three, certainly feels like Sheffield Wednesday’s biggest game of the season so far.

Vaulks admires the fans and the Owls faithful will back their team right until the end this season, despite their struggles with owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Blackburn Rovers vs Sheffield Wednesday kicks off at 12:30pm on Sunday and will be shown live on Sky Sports.
