Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney tipped to take first new role in football since Birmingham City sacking

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney could land an incredible new opportunity in football after being out of management since the beginning of 2024, according to stunning reports.

Wayne Rooney’s time in the dugout came to an end back in January after he was axed from Birmingham City following an ill-fated run at St Andrew’s.

The 38-year-old former Manchester United striker’s spell lasted only 83 days at Birmingham City, with Rooney suffering nine defeats in 15 matches in charge.

The United legend has broken his silence and admitted that he has received different offers, including the opportunity to take part in a Misfits Boxing event.

Rooney, who arrived at Birmingham City after his spell with DC United, has taken part in punditry duties since his sacking from the Championship club in January.

The ex-England and United captain was part of BBC’s coverage for United’s 1-0 FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest in the fifth round at City Ground in February.

Man Utd legend Rooney tipped for new role

Former Birmingham City manager Wayne Rooney was scheduled to make his debut on Match of the Day last week before he was forced to pull out from the show.

Posting on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, he wrote: “Gutted not to be making my debut on the iconic [Match of the Day] show tonight, it’s something I have wanted to do since I was little.

“Unfortunately, I have sustained a painful back injury during a holiday with my family but I look forward to being part of the team in the near future.

“Good luck to [Gary Lineker] and the guys for [tonight’s] show and see you soon.”

Responding to the tweet, Match of the Day’s official X account posted: “Looking forward to having you on soon.”

Wayne Rooney could soon make his return to football as a ‘key Euro 2024 pundit’ for BBC’s coverage of the European tournament in Germany this summer.

That is according to The Sun, which reports the former England and United striker could be part of the punditry team assembled for Euro 2024.

The newspaper added that the BBC would be keen to have Rooney in the coverage thanks to his ‘playing pedigree’ at major tournaments with England.

Rooney served as captain for England and shattered Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goalscoring record, with Harry Kane later eclipsing his ex-Three Lions teammate.

The Sun claimed that Rooney’s experience at international level with England would offer the BBC’s Euro 2020 coverage ‘extra credibility with viewers.’

Rooney ready for return to management

Aside from his brief time in punditry, Rooney has admitted that he is ready to put his torrid Birmingham City spell behind him and make a return to management.

Speaking on The Overlap’s Stick to Football show in February, he said: “I would, 100 per cent [take a role in League One].

“I want to get back into managing and I want to prove myself – whether that’s League Two, League One or Championship.

“It’s all experience – I’m only 38, I’ve had three managerial jobs. I’ve got quite a bit of experience, like with Derby in administration, and going out to the States [to manage DC United].

“I’ve got a bit of experience to lean on now, I’m still young in terms of a manager. I want to focus on getting back into management.

“The main thing, for me, is to completely cut out what I’ve done as a player and almost start again as a manager.

“Of course, my playing experience will help me, but I’m right at the bottom from a managerial point of view, and I want to work my way up.

“I’m not relying on what I’ve done as a player to get me into places that I shouldn’t be.”
