Martin Keown says striker Arsenal sold for £24m was actually better than Luis Suarez

Arsenal have had some fantastic strikers over the years.

Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the list goes on.

However, for all the incredible striking talent Arsenal have had, they’ve also had some real near-misses with some of the world’s top strikers.

Indeed, Arsenal have come close to signing some top players only to miss out at the last minute over the years, and perhaps the most notable story surrounding a striker who almost signed for Arsenal was the Luis Suarez saga.

Arsenal famously bid £40m + £1 to sign Suarez back in 2013 as they scrambled to sign a replacement for Robin van Persie.

Van Persie and Suarez, were, of course two of the best strikers in the Premier League at the time, and, interestingly, speaking to TNT Sports on TikTok, Martin Keown has now compared the two.

Martin Keown says Robin Van Persie was better than Luis Suarez

Keown ranked some of the best strikers in Premier League history and he put Van Persie ahead of the likes of Suarez, Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba.

“Oh Van Persie, yeah there’s no harm in that, we will put him at number one yeah,” Keown said.

Luis Suarez vs Robin Van Persie

Suarez and Van Persie were both incredible at the peak of their powers, but which player was better?

Well, in Premier League terms, Van Persie may just edge this argument.

The Dutchman not only won more Golden Boots than Suarez, he also won a league title during his time at Manchester United.

Of course, Suarez’s time at Barcelona puts an end to this argument as he achieved more and scored more than Van Persie ever did during his time at Camp Nou, but in purely Premier League terms, Van Persie may have the greater legacy.

The Dutchman was incredible for Arsenal and he was even better for Manchester United after his £24m move to Old Trafford.
