'Embarrassing': Garry Birtles slams 29-year-old Nottingham Forest man who has been seriously poor

Garry Birtles has hammered one Nottingham Forest player after his performance last weekend in the 2-2 draw against Wolves.

The Reds scored goals through Morgan Gibbs-White and Danilo but two Matheus Cunha strikes saw Forest settle for a point.

It wasn’t to be for Forest who gave everything during the game and in the end, it was a travesty that they didn’t get all three points.

Forest had a number of players who performed well throughout the contest – with some others struggling to get going against Wolves.

Ryan Yates was critiqued by Birtles after the game and there was another player who didn’t cover himself in glory – facing the wrath of the European Cup-winning legend.

Garry Birtles slams ’embarrassing’ Nottingham Forest forward

The former striker is a regular at the City Ground these days and on Saturday he watched one player produce an abject performance.

It wasn’t one of the starting eleven that came in for his criticism this time but on-loan striker Divock Origi.

The Belgian came on for the closing stages of the contest and was asked to play in a wide right position with Giovanni Reyna making way.

The game hinged on an incident right at the end when after a neat pass from Rodrigo Ribeiro, Origi was away down the right.

With Chris Wood waiting for a tap-in, all he had to do was square the ball across and Forest would surely claim three big points.

Instead, he overhit his pass and ended up blasting the ball out for a tame goal kick and the legend was incensed.

Birtles told the Forest Focus podcast: “I was right in line with it on the edge of the penalty area and I just couldn’t believe what he did there. It was just embarrassing. It wasn’t even difficult to do what he had to do.

“Again, he took one touch too many, Wood has got himself into a great area and the pace on the ball was just ridiculous, it beat everybody and it wasn’t even close.

“At that level, you’ve got to question Origi again. He just can’t perform for us for some reason.

“That’s a basic simple error, pass across the goal to win the game and he couldn’t do it.”

Another player deserves minutes instead of Origi

Nuno Espirito Santo is clearly favouring the experience of Origi from the bench right now and he has started some games recently too.

However, he was upstaged at the weekend by Ribeiro who produced an eye-catching display as he got some rare game time from the bench.

The Portuguese showed a few nice touches from the bench and got himself into some very good areas on the pitch.

His pass through to Origi when he fluffed his lines was composed and accurate, giving Espirito Santo some serious food for thought.

Now, Forest have just five games to save their season – and Birtles is right to question the Belgian.

As a result, the utilising of a costly loan signing, Origi, instead of a burgeoning young talent in Ribeiro makes no sense and the manager must act.
