'Not for everyone': Stan Collymore makes Nottingham Forest point as Man City crash out of Champions League

Manchester City saw their reign as Champions of Europe end and Stan Collymore has used Nottingham Forest to mock the title-chasers.

Collymore spent two years at Forest – scoring goals for fun – before signing for Liverpool and now keeps a foot in both camps.

Last night, City went into their quarter-final with Real Madrid with the scores locked at 3-3 from the first leg.

After a 1-1 draw following 120 minutes at the Etihad Stadium, it was to be penalties to decide the contest, with Los Blancos claiming a big victory.

City won the competition last season for the very first time – beating Inter in a tightly contested final.

The Citizens won the treble during 2022/23 and not only were they eyeing a double treble they were also eyeing a feat only achieved by Forest.

No English club has successfully defended the famous trophy since Forest won it in 1980 having laid their hands on it the year previous.

Now, Collymore has used a photo of a Forest great to make a point on X after City were dumped out of the Champions League.

Well, this is one flag that Forest fans can still fly high and although some fans find it cringe, there are worse things to bleat on about.

The Reds remain the last English club to successfully defend the trophy and it remains to be seen if it will ever be repeated.

Given that former Forest striker Collymore follows the fortunes of all of his clubs, he’s a follower of Liverpool too and now he’s poked fun at City on X.

He posted a photo of Brian Clough holding the trophy, with the words: “Retaining the European Champions Cup. Not for everyone.”

Naturally, this is a bit of a double-edged volley from Collymore with the heroic former striker likely fishing for nibbles from the City fan base.

Forest European Cup feat might never be repeated

Right now, it feels like City – managed by Pep Guardiola – were the only team who could even dream about defending the Champions League.

The field is getting a lot stronger and next season the actual format of the competition will change too making things more difficult.

When Forest won the competition it was a proper competition in our view.

There was none of this group stage nonsense that allows teams to potentially lose three games, yet still reach the knockout stages and win the trophy.

During one of the successful Forest campaigns, the Reds have to overcome Liverpool in a two-legged affair and the concept of that happening now is non-existent.

Forest are clearly a million miles away from competing in Europe once again but this feat is still something for the football club to be proud of.
