Pep Lijnders in the running to manage new club, could link up with 30-year-old former Liverpool player

While Liverpool search for their new manager, the futures of the existing staff also remains up in the air.

What we do know is that the likes of Pep Lijnders will follow Jurgen Klopp out of the exit door when the season comes to an end.

Other notable members of the Liverpool coaching staff, Peter Krawietz and Vitor Matos, will also depart along with Klopp and Lijnders.

As we know, Klopp is set to take a rest before deciding on his next move. But Lijnders will seemingly have no such break. Keen to properly start his career as a head coach, there had been hope amongst some that the 41-year-old may even take over from Jurgen at Anfield.

That isn’t going to happen, though. Instead, Lijnders has been linked with the soon-to-be vacant position at Ajax. And the big job in Amsterdam is not the only one the Dutchman is being considered for.

Pep Lijnders in running for Besiktas job

Lijnders is reportedly seen by clubs in Europe as potentially being a top-class manager. As a result, it’s no surprise to see him on shortlists.

The latest to be linked with taking a punt on the Dutch coach are Turkish giants Besiktas.

Having sacked Fernando Santos after just a couple of months in the job, the Eagles are once again looking for a new manager.

And according to Turkish outlet Sabah, Lijnders is one of the names being ‘evaluated’ for the role. It’s also claimed that the Reds assistant manager could ‘take his team with him.’ Presumably this is referring to Matos, and potentially some of the other backroom staff at Liverpool.

As has been reported elsewhere, Sabah also reiterate the interest from Ajax in Lijnders. No final decision is said to have been made from Besiktas’ point of view, but Pep is in the mix.

Lijnders could link up with former Liverpool star

If Lijnders takes any one of these two jobs he’d end up coaching one of his former charges at Liverpool.

Obviously, former Reds captain Jordan Henderson is currently with Ajax and would be a familiar face for Lijnders to rely on.

But at Besiktas too, Pep could call on one of Klopp’s former stalwarts. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain may not have been one of the shining lights of the Klopp era, but he’ll always be remembered well for what he achieved at Anfield.

Now plying his trade out in Istanbul, Oxlade-Chamberlain will be just one year through a three-year contract come the summer.

Although a familiar tale of injuries has disrupted his rhythm in 2024, Ox did show flashes of quality prior to that. Should he take over at Besiktas, he could be an ace up Lijnders’ sleeve. Interested to see how this pans out for Pep.
