'I think he's the best': Pundit now decides who is better - Alexander Isak or Ollie Watkins

Other than Erling Haaland, you could make a strong argument to say that Newcastle United have the best striker in the Premier League in Alexander Isak.

The 24-year-old is enjoying the best season of his career, with Alexander Isak currently boasting 21 goals in all competitions.

17 of those have come in the Premier League, with Isak still in contention to win the Golden Boot. With six games to go, he is three goals behind joint leaders Erling Haaland and Cole Palmer, who are both on 20.

While Haaland has not been as good as he was in his debut Premier League season, Isak is hitting new heights.

He is on fire right now, with everything he touches turning to goals. His two finishes against Tottenham Hotspur were outstanding, with his first leading to Micky van de Ven being ridiculed on social media.

But on the same weekend that Isak hit the 20-goal milestone, another Premier League striker continued his incredible campaign.

Another striker has scored more Premier League goals than Alexander Isak this season

Alexander Isak is doing very well in the Premier League this season, but one striker who has actually outscored him is Ollie Watkins.

Aston Villa’s main man up front scored in the 2-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday, taking his tally in the league to 19.

Watkins has got 26 goals in all competitions, meaning he has got five more than Isak. However, he has also made 11 more appearances. When you look at it like that, Isak actually averages more goals per game than Watkins.

Pundit decides who is better between Isak and Ollie Watkins

But who is the best? Well, NBC Sports pundit Robbie Mustoe has given his verdict, and decided who deserves the crown of being the Premier League’s best striker behind Haaland.

“Outside of Erling Haaland, and I’m sorry Ollie Watkins, I think he’s the best number nine [in the Premier League],” he said.

“And I think he’s got the potential with the way that he plays – he’s a centre forward that I particularly like. He’s different to Toney, different to Watkins. He’s got a little swagger about his play, and I know that Arsenal may be looking for a centre forward, and Newcastle have said he’s not going anywhere, but if there is a centre forward if anyone asked me who Arsenal should go buy, it’s Alexander Isak.

“He’s got the class, the quality, the skill, the talent, the goalscoring, the age, the future to be a brilliant striker at Arsenal.

“I’m not saying he’s going to go, but I’m forever impressed by a guy… I like a striker who can do something like ‘wow’, and he’s got that.”

Isak has the edge, but Arsenal won’t get him this summer

Obviously I am biased, but I completely agree with Mustoe. Isak is better than Watkins, and has to be considered the second best striker in the entire Premier League.

While Watkins is very good, he is not quite at the elite level that Isak is. You could put the Sweden international in any team and he would be a success, but I do not think the same can be said for Watkins.

And that is why Mustoe thinks Isak would be a good fit for Arsenal, who have been linked with signing the Newcastle striker.

Mikel Arteta’s recent comments explained exactly why he wants Isak, but the Arsenal boss will have to continue looking at him from afar. Newcastle have no plans to sell Isak this summer, with Eddie Howe intending to build his Toon team around him.
