UPS driver attacked for not giving N.J. man a ride, cops say

A South Jersey man with a knife allegedly attacked a UPS driver who refused to give him a ride Wednesday afternoon in Gloucester County, police said.

Monroe Township police responded to Madison Court Apartments shortly after 12:15 p.m. for a report of an assault at an apartment unit. An officer was told the alleged assailant left the apartment and jumped in a UPS truck, police said.

Patrolman Roy Pierson spotted a slow-moving UPS vehicle in the apartment parking lot as it struck a curb and came to rest partially in the grass. Inside, he found a 50-year-old Sicklerville man on top of the UPS driver, attempting to stab him with a knife, according to police.

The officer removed the alleged assailant from the truck and, with the assistance of another officer, placed the man under arrest.

The driver, a 52-year-old Franklinville man, was treated at a nearby hospital for minor cuts above his right eye and on his back, police said. A knife was recovered at the scene.

The UPS driver told police the man allegedly entered the truck and asked for a ride to the front of the apartment complex. When the driver said company policy did not permit passengers and that he had other deliveries to make, the man allegedly pulled a knife and began attacking, police said.

The man was charged with third-degree counts of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and resisting arrest.

He was jailed pending a detention hearing. Court records did not list an attorney for the defendant as of Thursday afternoon.

Any additional witnesses to the incident are asked to contact Monroe Police Detective Josh Sheppard at 856-728-9800, ext. 594.
