Report: Newcastle sent scouts to go watch £40m Chelsea star in one recent match

Newcastle United could be ready to raid Premier League rivals Chelsea once again this summer.

The Magpies brought in Lewis Hall on loan with an obligation to buy last year and now appear to have their eyes on another Chelsea player.

Mauricio Pochettino may lose a few members of his squad at the end of the season because of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Because of how much money Chelsea have spent in recent transfer windows, the club find themselves in a position where they may need to offload some players to balance things out.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have not been afraid to splash the cash, making Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez the two most expensive signings in Chelsea’s history.

Newcastle sent scouts to Chelsea vs Manchester United

Earlier this month, Chelsea took on Manchester United in a Premier League thriller at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues won 4-3 with Cole Palmer scoring a hat-trick and Conor Gallagher netting his side’s other goal.

According to ChronicleLive, Newcastle had scouts in attendance to watch the latter as his contract continues to run down.

With Gallagher’s deal expiring next year and Chelsea possibly needing to sell players to make money, the midfielder is one name that could depart west London this summer.

The aforementioned outlet has suggested that Gallagher could cost £40m.

Chelsea should not sell Conor Gallagher to Newcastle

Newcastle are now one of Chelsea’s rivals for European football qualification and Gallagher has been one of their top performers this season.

His average match rating on WhoScored (7.12) is higher than any other Chelsea player bar Palmer (7.44).

Whether the Blues need money or not, they should not be selling Gallagher to Newcastle.

It would make one of their rivals for the top six next season stronger and them weaker. From a football perspective, it would make little sense, though the club right now obviously have to think about finances as well.
