'Have to address that situation': David Ornstein makes behind-the-scenes claim about Arsenal after last night's loss

Arsenal will need to pick themselves up after their disappointing Champions League quarter-final elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich.

The Gunners drew 2-2 with the Bundesliga side in their first leg at the Emirates Stadium last week, with all to play for at the Allianz Arena.

Arsenal lost 1-0 on the night, Joshua Kimmich powering home a fierce header in the 63rd minute of the game for a 3-2 aggregate win.

The Gunners did well in the first half but struggled after the interval and never looked like getting back in the game and the tie.

Arsenal now need to regroup quickly in the Premier League, having conceded top spot and advantage in the title race to Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta has overseen progress at the Emirates Stadium since taking the reins in 2019, but what’s happening now is proving a bitter pill to swallow.

What has David Ornstein said about Mikel Arteta’s future at Arsenal?

However, as far as Arsenal are concerned, they’re happy with Arteta, according to David Ornstein.

The journalist, speaking on the Back Pages podcast, acknowledges that there will be scrutiny in wake of what happened, but they hope the Spaniard extends his contract.

“There will be a lot of scrutiny over this because Mikel Arteta and Arsenal have spent a great deal of money in the transfer market, making that record move for Declan Rice in particular,” said Ornstein.

“But it is still quite embryonic this group in terms of the age profile and their development together, and Mikel Arteta has clearly done a good job over the years at Arsenal. They’ll hope he continues to.

“He’ll be approaching the last 12 months of his own contract, so they’re going to have to address that situation.

“It’s progress, of course, because they weren’t in this competition in recent seasons. There will be regrets at the mistakes that were made at the lack of potency tonight in particular.”

Arteta has worked wonders at Arsenal since taking the reins. Back then, the Gunners could only have dreamed of being title challengers and Champions League quarter-finalists.

Admittedly, Arsenal aren’t quite there yet. But then again, when you look at the might of teams like Man City and Bayern, there’s no shame in that.

The Gunners are currently in the tier just below, but over the next few transfer windows, we’ll hopefully see even more quality added to the ranks, while the young core of the team gets better and better.
