'Right now': Pundit states who is more likely to go to the Euros - Anthony Gordon or James Maddison

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon is battling James Maddison for a place in the England squad for Euro 2024.

The Newcastle United winger made his Three Lions debut last month, and was impressive during a 1-0 defeat to Brazil.

Anthony Gordon‘s performances for England have put him right in the conversation to go to Euro 2024, and his form for Newcastle United has got even better since returning from international duty.

The 23-year-old is playing brilliantly right now, and continued his outstanding run with a breathtaking display against Tottenham Hotspur. Gordon scored one and provided two assists against Spurs, taking his goal contributions tally to 20 in all competitions.

Anthony Gordon outperformed Tottenham Hotspur star

And on the same day that Gordon excelled again, James Maddison had a nightmare.

It was his first appearance at St James’ Park since not signing for the Magpies, and he received a lot of abuse from the Toon Army. And he certainly did not thrive under the pressure, putting in a performance that made you wonder why Newcastle wanted to sign him in the first place.

Maddison is not playing brilliantly right now, at a time when he too is hoping to go to Euro 2024 with England.

Pundit decides who is more likely for England between Gordon and Maddison

But Southgate will only pick so many attackers in his squad, and pundit Robbie Earle has told NBC Sports’ YouTube channel who he thinks is more likely to be selected between Gordon and Maddison.

“Anthony Gordon, who has become sneakily important to the team,” he said.

“He was brought in and we know he had the issues initially with Eddie when he came off one game.

“He plays either side of the pitch, he plays centre forward. I saw him in the League Cup against Manchester United and he was outstanding. His attitude is spot on.

“He, right now, for me, is ahead of James Maddison to get in the England squad for the Euros.”

Gordon has to be in the England squad for Euro 2024

If Southgate is only going to pick one between Gordon and Maddison, it has to be the Newcastle United star.

He has enjoyed a breakthrough season, and has taken his game to a completely new level. He even proved himself on the international stage last month, and has continued his scintillating form since returning to Newcastle United.

And in comparison to Maddison, Gordon is much more versatile. As Robbie Earle says, he can play on either flank or through the middle as a striker. In contrast, Maddison will probably only be used out wide, as it is difficult to envision Southgate playing him centrally behind the centre forward.

But it is no slight towards Maddison that Gordon should be ahead of him in the England pecking order. He is also outperforming Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish, who are Three Lions regulars.
