'Unreal': Inter Miami star Julian Gressel gives his verdict on 'genius' Lionel Messi moment last weekend

Julian Gressel has given his verdict over one of Lionel Messi’s ‘genius’ moments for Inter Miami last weekend against Sporting Kansas City.

The reigning Ballon d’Or holder was in exceptional form for the Herons in Missouri, with Messi setting up Diego Gomez with a brilliant assist in the opening half before scoring a sensational goal of his own after the restart.

Winning praise from Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes and pundit Bradley Wright-Phillips, Messi’s performance on Saturday was arguably the forward’s best yet in Inter Miami colors since joining last year.

And teammate Gressel is the latest to praise Messi after what the midfielder saw on Saturday.

Gressel in awe of Messi’s ‘genius’ Inter Miami goal vs Sporting Kansas City

Speaking on the Player/Manager podcast, Gressel detailed his amazement over Messi’s goal for Inter Miami, a devastating knuckleball that beat Tim Melia from a good 25-yards out to put the Herons in front in Missouri.

Indeed, it was one of Messi’s best strikes to date for Inter Miami, and the sheet technical quality on show for the goal is something no player in the history of MLS will be able to replicate.

Gressel said when asked about Messi’s goal: “An unreal strike, we’re talking about not needing that much space of being able to just take a touch and free himself to take a shot from 25-yards.

“What a laser, it was a knuckleball without really hitting it, but he struck it well and it was a big goal for us and a genius strike from him, it’s why he’s on our team.”

Teammates might never get used to Messi’s ridiculous moments

With a record-breaking eight Ballon d’Or’s, it’s safe to say that Messi is the greatest player of all time, with the forward now gracing MLS and Inter Miami with his once-in-a-generation quality.

And for Messi’s new teammates, they might never get used to seeing the Argentine doing the ridiculous in professional games, with the attacker already making a fool out of defenses this season.

Indeed, with Messi now fully fit and only MLS to focus on between now and the end of the season, there’s a real chance that we will see more viral moments from the 36-year-old, who will want to win every game.
