Emailed threat said bombs were located in N.J. middle school and BOE building, cops say

A bomb threat in Marlboro Township that closed schools Thursday was emailed to a district staffer and claimed four bombs were located in various buildings around the district, police said Thursday afternoon.

The email that contained the bomb threat was received by a Marlboro Memorial Middle School staff member who alerted the Marlboro police department at approximately 6:30 a.m., police said.

The email detailed four locations that bombs were placed including two locations in Marlboro Township, authorities said. One bomb was alleged to be in the middle school and another at the board of education office, according to police.

“Both locations were thoroughly and comprehensively checked with the assistance of explosive detection canines,” police said in a press release. “Nothing dangerous or hazardous was identified during the course of the searches.”

The Marlboro Township Police Detective Bureau is investigating where the threat originated from, but has currently labeled it as low risk and credibility, according to officials.

Thursday’s closure impacted seven k-8 schools in the district, which send high school students to the Freehold Regional High School district. Freehold Regional High School remained open Thursday, officials said.

A letter to parents from district superintendent Michael Ballone on Thursday night said that schools would operate on a normal schedule on Friday, but with an increased police presence. The letter also said that all district schools and buses will be searched on Friday.

The threats also closed municipal offices on Thursday as officers swept buildings, borough officials said on Facebook.
