Dejphon Chansiri and Sheffield Wednesday may have one eye on Barcelona manager search - opinion

Ahead of the summer, Sheffield Wednesday may be keeping a distant watch on what happens at Barcelona.

Barcelona have crashed out of the Champions League this week, also sitting eight points behind Real Madrid in the La Liga title race.

It’s been a fairly forgettable season for the Catalan giants and they’re also in the process of finding a new manager.

Barca legend Xavi is the man in charge right now.

He announced earlier this year though that he’s leaving the club this summer, with a relatively short list of names tipped to replace him.

Barcelona are being closely linked with another former player, Rafa Marquez.

The former Mexican defender could replace his former teammate Xavi at the Camp Nou in the summer, though Spanish journalist Guillem Balague doesn’t think that it’ll so be straight forward.

Balague now believes that Barcelona sporting director Deco fancies Hansi Flick as a potential replacement for Xavi this summer.

Flick has been out of work since September last year when he left his post as the German national team boss, with the likes of Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich also on his managerial CV.

And of course, Flick was Danny Rohl‘s mentor.

Rohl was Flick’s no.2 at both Bayern Munich and in the German set up, with Flick attending a Sheffield Wednesday game earlier this season to watch his prodigy Rohl in action.

Could Hansi Flick and Danny Rohl reunite at Barcelona this summer

It’s a question certainly not beyond the realms of reason.

Flick obviously views Rohl as someone he trusts and Rohl’s inaugural showing in management has been impressive, which might give Flick all the more reason to fancy a reunion with Rohl this summer, should he return to management.

And for Rohl, a no.2 gig at Barcelona may be enticing; more so than possible League One football with Sheffield Wednesday, that’s for sure.

For the Owls, it seems like they need Championship status to stand any chance of keeping Rohl this summer.

Sunderland are interested in Rohl and they could make their move whether or not the Owls stay in the Championship this season.

But Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri may also have an eye now on Barcelona’s managerial search; if Flick takes charge and Barca come in for Rohl, Chansiri may well be rubbing his hands at the prospect of a hefty compensation fee from the Spanish giants.

Though Rohl’s next club will be his own decision.

The idea of Rohl going back to managing as a no.2 may be unlikely, though not impossible.

For now, his focus will be on Championship survival, and the next game vs Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.
