'I have to go with...': Paul Merson now predicts who will finish in the top four...Tottenham or Aston Villa

The race to finish in the top four in this season’s Premier League has taken a fresh twist this week after Man City and Arsenal both went out of the Champions League.

After initially looking on course to seal five places for next season’s Champions League, it now looks like only the usual four will get their place.

For Tottenham and Aston Villa, that means the final few games are going to be seriously nervous.

As it stands, Aston Villa hold the upper-hand. The Villans are three points clear of Tottenham and while Spurs have a game in hand, Unai Emery’s side are just ahead still by three goals on goal difference.

Of course, both sides play some big games, with Tottenham in particular facing some of the title challengers.

And speaking on Sky Sports just now about the race for the top four, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has picked who he thinks will get the job done.

Paul Merson makes his top four prediction out of Tottenham and Aston Villa

Speaking on Soccer Saturday today, Merson had his say on the matter of top four.

And staying loyal to one of his former clubs, Merson has backed Emery’s Villa to just get the job done.

“They have got the hardest games, Tottenham, they can affect the Premier League by playing the three teams, but I have just got to go with Aston Villa at the moment.

“I have to go with Villa. I think they are so up and down at the moment, Tottenham, you know the Fulham result, they got slaughtered and then last week against Newcastle, it’s so up and down, it’s a bag of revels at the moment, they need consistency,” Merson said.

Ups and downs to come

The title race, relegation battle, and race for the top four all have some interest with just five or six games remaining and that is a good thing for the Premier League.

Right now, as Merson hints at in his prediction, it’s quite hard to choose who is going to get over the line.

Both Tottenham and Villa have inconsistencies about their game and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if both of them lost and won games between now and the end of May.

Tottenham’s fixtures seem to be the tougher on paper. But given what we’ve seen this season, anything could happen.
